Blogs vs. Wikis

Blogs and Wikis are both web pages that are highly used today. They however have different purposes. Blogs are posts written and created by only one individual on topics that matters to he/she. However, the only way for others to contribute to the blog is by leaving comments. By leaving comments, it helps them contribute to the post and start a thoughtful conversation. On the other hand, wikis are a collaborative web application where the group works together to create the contents. Others are able to modify and edit the wiki web page as they please but some wikis require an approval by the administrators for such changes to be shown in order to test for accuracy.

Many businesses today use wiki as a tool for content management. Information can easily be shared and exchanged among staffs. For instance, Nokia uses Socialtext wiki software to "facilitate information exchange within its Insight & Foresight group". In addition, Yahoo uses Twiki for its development team to overcome the conflict with working from separate locations.

Wikis are cheap and easy to use such that it can be used for different types of data such as spreadsheet, Powerpoint, PDFs, etc. Businesses are experimenting with wiki technology. It is predicted that most workplace will be using wiki. I think that there will be a chance for a more advanced wiki that tailors to the specific usage for each company or even each purpose for the group as more people use wiki.

Impacts of Social Networking

Social networking has taken a substantial role in many people's daily lives. Many have grown dependent on social websites and would feel a withdrawal if they do not have access to it. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users who interact with others based on a common interest. With information through your profile, outsiders can view and connect with you. However, is social networking affecting us positively or negatively? I believe that it can help us expand our network and develop friendships but sometimes, it can become a distraction from the real world. Unknowingly, social networking affects us physically, socially, and emotionally in good and bad ways. As someone who uses many social networking sites, through researching, I hope to learn in depth the positive and negative impacts social networking has on our lives.
